Irina Kurganova
Dr., Hab. (Ecology and Soil science), leading researcher of the Institute of Physicochemical and Biological Problems in Soil Science. Russian Academy of Sciences

Irina Kurganova is Assoc. Prof. (Ecology, 2009) and a leading researcher of the Institute of Physicochemical and Biological Problems in Soil Science of the Russian Academy of Sciences. She received her Ph.D. (Soil science) in 1987 and Dr. Habilitation (Ecology and Soil science) in 2010 from Moscow State University. Her main scientific achievements include the estimation of total and microbial soil respiration for the territory of Russian Federation, changes in organic carbon stocks in soils of Russia and Kazakhstan due to the large-scale abandonment of agricultural lands in early 1990s. Irina Kurganova has received research grants from DAAD (in 1999, 3004, 2011, 2015) to Göttingen University (Germany) and from Fulbright program to Davis University (2005-2006, California, USA). She has published more than 50 articles in high level international journals, including Global Change Biology, Land Degradation and Development, Geoderma, etc. In 2015, Irina Kurganova was nominated to the International Environmental Award "Evi Award 2016", and in 2011 she received the Small Prize of Publishing House MAIK Nauka Interperiodika (Russian Academy of Science) for the cycle of publications "Greenhouse gas emissions, inventories and balance of organic carbon in soils of Russia in the conditions of current land use and observed climate change".
